Church Idolatry

May 30th, 2008

I have been asked by a couple of people recently why I no longer “go to church”. It seemed like something good to start writing about also.  There are lots of reasons I don’t go to church anymore. Each of them even have their own subcategories. But for now allow me to focus on the thing that first started to push me away. It is my belief that the churches themselves have become the very thing we worship. Churches have made idols of themselves. They are the modern day golden calves.

Have you ever noticed that to most pastors or churchgoers the answer to all of lifes problems will involve church? You aren’t attending enough church services. You aren’t giving enough tithes and offerings to your church. You aren’t attending Sunday School. You aren’t volunteering enough time to the church. The list goes on and on, but it seems they believe the only way to please God is by doing things for a church.

I finally realized I wasn’t serving God. I was serving a church. I was practicing church idolatry somehow convinced that would motivate God to love me more, bless me more, and take care of all my problems.

This is what started me down the road of following God outside the walls of a traditional church. I have discovered many more things along the way. I am sure I will write about many of them as time goes by. But it all started when I decided I wanted to start following Jesus and quit following pastors, churches, and denominations.

You are not alone! Reggie McNeal, in his book, The Present Future: Six Tough Questions for the Church, says, “A growing number of people of people are leaving the institutional church for a new reason. They are leaving not because they have lost faith. They are leaving the church to preserve it.†Now, that’s a good reason to leave the church.

I like the way that is worded. I definitely reached a crossroads at one point that presented me two choices: 1) lose the church or 2)lose my faith. I’m really glad I went with choice #1.
