Ken

September 15th, 2009

My name is Ken. Music is my life. I play the guitar (and many other instruments… some poorly… all by ear) and DJ, when I’m not twisting screws on some piece of office equipment. I spent the greater part of my life searching for some kind of sign that God was real, and really cared for me. (I never did see that shooting star!) I found the answer one night when I asked a simple rhetorical question at a low point in my life : “Why can’t I just have somebody love me?” A simple question from a broken heart. “I love you so much I sent my only Son to die for you” was the answer I heard. I was not a religious person and did not think that way… EVER! That moment changed my life.

I like to find opportunities to talk to people about Jesus when they need it, not me. I can’t do a thing for the guy that comes to church every Sunday in his BMW, always tithes and volunteers to hand out the bulletins. But I can help the person who is hurting so bad that they feel like they can’t go on. The guy in an 8×8 cell who has lost everything because of a stupid mistake (we all fall short!). The guy with tattoos and piercings. The “tax collectors and prostitutes”.  I remember when I was DJing at a club downtown during the B.B.Q. fest and had stepped outside to take a break. I had two gentlemen approach me and ask me if they could talk to me about Jesus. “Sure”, I said, “What would you like to know?” They assumed that because of where I was, and how I was dressed, I wouldn’t know about Christ. Never assume you know someone by their appearance!

I’m married to the love of my life, Tina. She is the answer to a prayer for someone special, that would love me for me. She is an amazing cook, and I’ve come to learn that it doesn’t really matter which way the toilet paper is placed on the holder after all.  I don’t think she knows just how wonderful she is! We laugh all the time (mostly her at me), and love to kayak, camp and fish.  She is truly my BFF!

Mark

April 14th, 2008

Hello all,
My name is Mark Main. A little background about me might help you understand the things I write a little more. Then again if you begin to understand my way of thinking it might make you just as crazy as me. I won’t mind though. Just like misery, crazy enjoys the company.

I have been married to my wonderful wife Melissa for 15 years. We have two great daughters. I work in a factory that makes spaghetti sauce.
I call myself a Jesus follower. I have some problems with the term Christian. If you read very many of the upcoming entries on this blog my reasons for that will become evident. What I have no problem with is my love for and desire to live for Jesus.

As you read the things I have to say on this blog you may find yourself thinking that I am really messed up. I’m OK with that. I’d probably agree with you. The only thing you will never find messed up about me is my hair. That isn’t really bragging though, seeing as I don’t have any.

So, what could an admittedly messed up, bald Jesus follower have to say that would have any significance or relevance? I don’t know if I can answer that question. I just gotta believe there are other people out there with some of the same questions and struggles as me. If nothing else maybe someone will find some relief to know they aren’t alone. If I am messed up I obviously don’t have all the answers. Truth be told, I probably have very few of the answers. On the other hand I have lots and lots of questions. I actually view that as a positive thing.

I find questions to be refreshing. I find doubt to be honest. I find insecurity to be great motivation to lean on God and not our own understanding. I find blind adherence to dogma and doctrine to be frightening. The moment we stop looking to change we have stopped looking to God.

It is my hope along the way that I will make you think about things you have never considered before. I hope I make you rethink things you thought you already knew. The goal is not to change any particular belief. It is simply to challenge them. It is only by continually challenging our beliefs that we can avoid the arrogance that comes from becoming complacent in them.

God Bless!

Bob

January 23rd, 2008

Hey. I’m Bob Coons. (I’m the one on the left . . . that’s my wife, Debbie, on the right.)

I’m one of the contributors to the Journey blog. I love to ask questions and discuss stuff, any kind of stuff, with people. I can really “go off” on certain topics, though. (Check out my posts in “95+,” basically it’s my rant about the church—and you thought you had issues.)

I live in the country, the woods actually (24 acres of trees), with my wife. Debbie and I have been married for 34 years (OK, so I’m old, I can live with that . . . I think). My daughter, Jennifer, is married to Wayne and lives in Bowling Green, KY. They had their first child (my first grandchild - I told you I’m old) September 26, 2007. His name is “Bobby.” We also have two dogs, Solomon (a golden retreiver), and Joe (a “Cocker” spaniel). We used to have a bunch of ducks at our pond, but they all became “coyote food.” When I walk in the woods I sometimes see deer, turkey, owls, raccoons, and snakes. It’s often a spiritual experience!

Maybe I should tell you that I’m a pastor (but please don’t be scared off by that—and don’t tell anybody either—I’m trying to keep it a secret). I teach (some call it preaching) most Sunday mornings at Seven Hills Church in Owensboro, KY @ 10:30.

The Journey is my heartburst, really. You could call it an experiment in a new way of doing and being the church. It’s for people who can’t stand church (I’m one of them, sometimes). Check it out here.

My fortune cookie (yesterday) said, “Two people shorten a road.” I hope you’ll join me in this life-journey and the road will be shortened for both of us.

Happy trails!

Scott

March 6th, 2007

I’m Scott. I’m 22. I work at a bakery. I go to college (Owensboro Community and Technical College). I eat. I sleep.

I’ve lived in Owensboro for most of my life. I currently live with my mom and step-father. My parents were divorced when I was young. But I’m blessed because my dad didn’t abandon me and I know some aren’t so lucky. I have an older sister who is married and has given me a nephew (and another child on the way!).

I did some work with Youth With A Mission in Tyler, TX for about a year altogether. I just got back from a trip to North Africa.

I have a desire to be a part of a monastic movement in Owensboro: basically a group of Jesus loving friends living together, living life, practically impacting their community.

I grew up in a traditional southern baptist church. My theology is pretty unstable; all of my beliefs have been razed (in the spirit of Descartes). But I’m tending to believe things about God that the traditional church does not.

I enjoy the outdoors, riding my bike, camping, building fires. I like to read and write. I enjoy food (sometimes too much) and sitting around with friends.
